JEFFERSON, THOMAS. Autograph Letter Signed, "Th:Jefferson," as President, with Franking Signature ("Th:Jefferson Pr. US"), to James Din

REMODELING MONTICELLO JEFFERSON, THOMAS. Autograph Letter Signed, "Th:Jefferson," as President, with Franking Signature ("Th:Jefferson Pr. US"), to James Dinsmore, explaining that the window weights are not appropriate, stating that he had ordered 1000 pounds of lead for use as weights, and stating when to expect the lead and other articles. 1/2 page, 4to, with integral address leaf addressed in his hand; seal tears in address leaf expertly repaired (not affecting signature), folds. Washington, 1 November 1807

  • Notes: "I find that the window weights will be so small & long that the small degree of warping which happens in their cooling will probably render them useless; I have therefore this day ordered 1000. lb of pig lead from Philad'a, which I observe costs but 3/4 of the price of bar-lead, to wit, 10 cents, and I presume is as good for our purpose. You may expect it at Richmond in 3 weeks from this time. The oil & white lead for Mr. Barry left Philadelphia Oct. 25. & of course will be at Richmond the 2d week of this month."
Between 1796 and 1809, Jefferson enlarged and remodeled Monticello, his residence in Charlottesville, VA. The new design included Neoclassical elements, a style to which Jefferson would have been exposed during his term as U.S. Minister to France, 1785-89.
Dinsmore (1771?-1830) was an Irish joiner who oversaw building projects at Monticello between 1798 and 1809.
