JEFFERSON, THOMAS. The Proceedings of the Government of the United States in Maintaining the Public Right to the Beach

JEFFERSON, THOMAS. The Proceedings of the Government of the United States in Maintaining the Public Right to the Beach of the Missisipi [sic], adjacent to New-Orleans, against the Intrusion of Edward Livingston. Frontispiece map. 80 pages. 8vo, original plain wrappers, worn and stained; dampstaining, minor wear, a few passages marked in ink or red pencil; uncut. New York: Ezra Sergeant, 1812

  • Notes: first edition. Jefferson wrote this legal brief regarding a dispute with Edward Livingston over a tract of land on the Mississippi known as the Batture, which Jefferson had claimed for the federal government while president. Livingston had sued Jefferson for $100,000, but the case was dismissed. Concerned that the public considered the court''s dismissal to be based on a technicality, Jefferson had 250 copies printed for him to distribute to congressmen and other political figures (though he gave permission to the publisher to print additional copies for sale).
