  • Notes: first edition of Jenner's second publication on smallpox vaccination, following his groundbreaking 1798 Inquiry into the Causes and Effects of the Variolae Vaccinae. LeFanu 52; Norman 1167.
    with an interesting undated one-page als attesting to growing public acceptance of vaccination, addressed to Major Louis Holladay by Z. Lewis and Robert Hart, contemporary proponents of the practice, reading in part: "We take the freedom to inform you (supposing that you may not have heard of it) that there is lately discovered a new Disorder [i. e., cowpox] which when people have once had for ever prevents their having the Smallpox--This Disorder is not infectious . . . being fully persuaded of the above Facts and an opportunity offering to procure the above mentioned Disorder we propose to try it on some of our Family and think proper to give you the above information that you may not be surprized by Misrepresentations and should be glad to have some conversation with you on the subject . . . "
