JOAN MITCHELL Untitled (from Poems).

JOAN MITCHELL
Untitled (from Poems).

Color screenprint, 1961. 447x367 mm; 17 5/8x14 1/2 inches, full margins. The deluxe edition of 28, aside from the regular edition of 200. Published by Tiber Press, New York. A superb impression with strong colors.

In 1951, Joan Mitchell (1925-1992) exhibited her work in the landmark "Ninth Street Show" alongside that of Jackson Pollock, Willem de Kooning, and Hans Hofmann, whose class Mitchell purportedly took (in the late 1940s) but left after one day, saying: "I couldn't understand a word he said so I left, terrified." Regarded as a leading female figure in the New York School by the early 1950s, her work matured through the predominant influences of Franz Kline and De Kooning, their work especially reflective in the present print.

She often painted in brilliant colors juxtaposed to the chaotic marks of black and motionless voids of the bare canvas, but several years later, from 1960-64, Mitchell concentrated her forms to more densely packed masses of black with some sombre colors. Her process virtually animated her supports: "the paint flung and squeezed on to the canvases, spilling and spluttering across their surfaces and smeared on with the artist's fingers."
