JOE ROSENTHAL (1911-2006) Raising of the Flag at Iwo Jima. 1945.

JOE ROSENTHAL (1911-2006)
Raising of the Flag at Iwo Jima. 1945.
Silver print, the image measuring 9½x7½ inches (24.1x19.1 cm.), with Rosenthal's signature and date in the negative and a Naval Censor stamp on verso.

  • Condition: Joe Rosenthal's "Raising of the Flag at Iwo Jima" (1945) is in very good condition. With soft dimentional gray tones and creamy highlights, the print is overall clean and bright.

In strong, raking light it is possible to find some slight handling imperfections, none of which are distracting when viewing the print under typical conditions. There is an arc-shaped soft crease beginning to the left of the figures and extending into the two at left, a few small half-moon marks in the sky (particularly below the flag), and some nearly imperceptible linear craquelure marks near the lower left corner and at the upper left edge. And finally, there are a couple very faint and isolated specs of residue at the far top edge, near the right corner. These imperfections are unobtrusive, and typical to the format.

Print verso is overall clean, with just slight age-appropriate warming at the edges.
With Rosenthal's signature and date in the negative and a Naval Censor stamp on verso.
