Johann Sturm (1507-1589)

De Amissa Dicendi Ratione Liri Duo. A Humanist Sammelband.

Lyon: Apud Seb. Gryphium, 1542.
Octavo, the text was first published in 1538; woodcut printer's device to title page;  17th century ownership inscription to title page; woodcut printer's device to final leaf; rare at auction, RBH lists no copies.

[Bound with] Marcantonius Majoragio's (1514-1555) Antiparadoxon Libri Sex in Quibus M. Tullii Ciceronis Omnia Paradoxa Refelluntur, Lyon: Apud Seb. Gryphium, 1546; woodcut printer's marks to title and verso of final leaf;

[And] Majoragio's Decisiones XXV, Lyons: Gryphius, 1544; the three titles bound in full contemporary limp parchment; final work with worm and damp damage to final few leaves with loss, along with older yellowed repairs at the top edge of the last six leaves; lacking last two leaves (likely blank but for printer's device/blank); 6 5/8 x 4 1/4 in.

Sturm was a humanist educator who set the curriculum for the Strasbourg Gymnasium where he was Rector between 1538 and 1581. This grouping of humanist texts written and published by scholarly thinkers & educators during their lifetimes presents an interesting juxtaposition. Cicero was a favorite of Sturm, whereas Majoragio writes in his Antiparadoxon that Cicero's dialogues do not correctly follow the Socratic ideal and that much of the Ciceronian canon is inherently false.

  • Condition: Sturm: a-m8, n4. Majoragio I: a-p8. Majoragio II: a-i8, h6 (lacking h7 & h8).
