JOHANN VAN DE MIJNNESTEN, FORMERLY MASTER I.A.M. OF ZWOLLE (FOLLOWER OF)

(North Netherlands active circa 1470-95)
The Agony in the Garden.

Pen and black ink and gouache, heightened with gold on vellum. 406x306 mm; 16x12 1/8 inches.

The current drawing is a nearly identical sized copy after Zwolle's engraving (Lehrs VII, p. 182, 3). The engraving itself is extremely rare. Lehrs, in his catalogue of the early Dutch and Flemish engravings, lists only 9 impressions, of which only one was in excellent condition and only 2 were--in 1930--still in private hands. The only impression listed in the United States is at the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston.
