Johannes de Sacrobosco (c. 1195-1256)

Libellus de Sphaera, with Extensive Contemporary Marginalia.

Wittenberg: Apud Josephum Clug, 1538.
Octavo, illustrated with numerous woodcut text diagrams; volvelles without their moving parts; bound with an added section of 24 blank leaves that have been inscribed with manuscript annotations in a few hands, likely classroom notes; dense marginalia to most of the text, with numerous ownership signatures and slogans to title and pastedowns, including at least one monastic institution, some obscured; bound in original wallet-style limp parchment binding with an perforated flap that closes securely when the alum-tawed laces are threaded through the holes in the covering material; an unusual structure and a nice survival, almost certainly bound this way, cheaply, out of tough materials, with 3 extra signatures of blank leaves and a secure binding that closes for portability and protection while used by multiple young scholars; 6 x 3 3/4 in.

  • Notes: Ex libris Professor, Astronomer, Historian & Bibliophile Owen Gingerich.
  • Condition: A4, B-E8, F4, G8; A4, B-G8, H4.
