Regiomontanus [aka] Johannes Müller von Königsberg (1436-1476)

De Triangulis Planis et Sphaericis Libri Quinque.

Basel: [Henrich Petri & Peter Perna, 1561].
Folio; third edition; this copy with a variant title that omits the printer's mark and containing only Regiomontanus's text, like the copy in Munich at the Bavarian State Library [https://mdz-nbn-resolving.de/details:bsb00029701] a copy offered by Goldschmidt in the 1940s, and a copy offered in these rooms in 1964; other copies bear Petri's printer's mark on the title page and contain a work by the editor, Dutch astronomer & mathematician, Daniel Santbech; housed in old parchment but completely disconnected, worming inside boards, no endleaves; ex libris Michel Chasles with bookplate; 12 x 7 3/4 in.

Regiomontanus's work on spherical and plane trigonometry was the first systematic treatment of the subject printed in the west. It was originally composed in the 1460s but was not published until after the author's death in 1533. Without an understanding of trigonometric calculations regarding triangles, astronomy would be much hampered. This augmented edition helped flesh out Copernicus's heliocentric model by supporting the theory with objective proofs.

  • Notes: Ex libris Professor, Astronomer, Historian & Bibliophile Owen Gingerich.
  • Condition: *4, a-o6, p8. 4 preliminary leaves, 146 numbered pages, 19 unnumbered leaves bearing tables.
