JOHANNES VAN VLIET (after Rembrandt) Bust of an Oriental, Wearing a High Cap

JOHANNES VAN VLIET (after Rembrandt)
Bust of an Oriental, Wearing a High Cap.

Etching, 1633. 213x177 mm; 8 3/8x7 inches, small margins. Second state (of 2). A superb, richly-inked impression of this very scarce etching.

Van Vliet (1600/10-1668?) worked with Rembrandt during the early 1630s in Leyden, before Rembrandt's departure for Amsterdam, and copied a number of early paintings by Rembrandt (the current work included) as etchings which were marketed through Rembrandt's future wife, Saskia's uncle, the painter-art dealer Hendrick Uylenburgh. Hollstein 24.
