John F. Kennedy (1917-1963)

Profiles in Courage. Inscribed First Edition.

New York: Harper & Brothers, 1956.
First edition, likely later printing, octavo; without a publisher's code on the copyright; signed and inscribed by Kennedy to Harry F. Byrd Jr. (1914-2013) "with best wishes" in black ink on the front free endpaper; bound in black cloth-backed blue boards, spine gilt-lettered; in the unclipped dust jacket (spine lightly sunned, section of loss to upper edge of rear panel, a few short closed tears, toning to verso; couple corner creases; wear to cloth at edges and corners, faint discoloration to endpapers); 8 ¼ x 5 ½ in.

Harry F. Byrd Jr. served as the United States Senator in Virgina from 1966 until 1983. He was preceded by his father, Harry F. Byrd Sr., a dominant figure in Virginia politics who strongly opposed John F. Kennedy's liberal platform. Before entering the Senate himself, Byrd Jr. was closely associated with the Byrd Organization, the powerful political machine led by his father, though he later broke with it by running as an Independent.
