Applauding CIA director after firing him for Bay of Pigs fiasco

John F. Kennedy

Typed Letter Signed, "John Kennedy," as President, to former CIA Director Allen Dulles ("Dear Allen"),

praising him for his exemplary service. Kennedy has struck out the typed words "Mr. Dulles" in the salutation and written above them, "Allen:," in holograph. 1 page, 4to, White House stationery; some smudging affecting few letters of signature.

Washington, 29 November 1961.

  • Notes: "As you leave the office which you have held with such distinction, I am sure you know that you carry with you the admiration and affection of all of us who have served with you in the last ten years. I am glad to be counted among the seven Presidents in whose Administration you have worked, and I am glad also that we shall continue to have your help and counsel . . . ."

In April, 1961, CIA Director Allen W. Dulles was responsible for the failed covert invasion of Cuba by U.S. paramilitary troops, CIA operatives, and U.S.-funded Cuban rebels, intended to force the collapse of Fidel Castro's regime. The failed invasion prompted discussion of CIA reorganization and the forced resignation of Dulles by President John F. Kennedy. Dulles was later appointed to the Warren Commission investigating Kennedy's assassination, concluding that the CIA played no role in the president's death.
