John Hooper (d. 1555)

A Declaracion of Christe and of his Offyce.

Zurich: Augustyne Fries, 1547.
First edition, octavo, incomplete, lacking first 8 leaves (including title page), and final two blanks; bound in scrappy later half parchment; contents somewhat toned with some slight tears with loss; title supplied in facsimile; 5 1/4 x 3 1/2 in.

STC 13745; ESTC S104201.

Hooper was burned at the stake during the reign and at the direction of the Catholic Mary Tudor. He was living in exile in Zurich in 1547 when this work was published. He returned to Britain to claim his inheritance and through a number of controversies, ran afoul of Bishop Stephen Gardiner.

This work was curiously printed in an unusual mix of roman letters and gothic type, undoubtedly because of its continental origin. Gothic lower-case b, w, h, f, o, t and y are used throughout, along with upper case W and a ch ligature, making for a unique look.
