A wonderful early airplane image featuring soldiers in khaki who are watching as a plane soars between the blue sea and the red sky. During World War I, "The Army Air Service [the precursor to the Air Force], like the Navy, was dependent on recruiting. Only the Army itself had a selective enlistment system.
