John Steinbeck (1902-1968)

The Grapes of Wrath.

New York: The Viking Press, 1939.
First edition, octavo; bound in publisher's oatmeal cloth stamped with a line drawing in reddish-brown, endpapers printed with a portion of "The Battle Hymn of the Republic", top edge stained yellow; in the unclipped pictorial jacket designed by Elmer Hader with "First Edition" printed on the front flap (jacket spine panel darkened, dampstain to lower edge and verso, a few short tears; crease to about 20 leaves, clearly present before the text was printed); housed in a red cloth slipcase; 8 x 5 ¼ in.

Steinbeck's Grapes of Wrath is one of the most influential works of 20th century American literature. It is the story of the Joad family, tenant farmers from Dust Bowl-ravaged Oklahoma who flee to California in search of a brighter future. A hard-hitting depiction of Great Depression-era America, this Pulitzer Prize-winning book addresses issues of power, social injustice, and political inequality that remain relevant today.
