JOHN VACHON (1914-1975)

Burlington, Iowa * Ravalli County, Mont., Old Russian-born sheep herder and lambing hand * St. Mary's County, MD, George Pernell and Lucas Barnes picking peas for a canning factory.
Together, 3 photographs. Silver prints, the image measuring 197x241 mm; 7¾x9½ inches, and slightly smaller, and one the reverse, the sheets slightly larger, the first with Vachon's F.S.A. credit stamp, the typed title and date, and the numeric notation in pencil, on verso, and the others with a Pictures for Democracy stamp with Vachon's credit and print notations in ink, and a typed label with Vachon's credit, the caption, and date, also on verso. 1940 and February 1942.

  • Condition: This group of three photographs by John Vachon is in overall very good to nearly excellent condition.

Burlington, Iowa: This print is very nearly excellent. Upon exceedingly close inspection in quite strong, raking light, it is possible to find some tiny scattered surface inconsistencies, but these appear to be related to the ferrotyped surface. They are minor and nearly imperceptible. The print is overall nearly excellent, with clear delineation of tone, detail, and a bright clean surface.

Ravalli County, Mont., Old Russian-born sheep herder and lambing hand: This print is also overall bright and clean. With careful inspection in strong raking light it is possible to find small handling marks in the lower third of the image area (in particular a couple diagonal marks at the lower right corner and another to the figure's left), but these are mostly visible in strong raking light and do not detract from the rich, clear print quality.

St. Mary's County, MD, George Pernell and Lucas Barnes picking peas for a canning factory: This print is also in very good condition. There is handling mark in the upper left quadrant, mostly visible in strong, raking light, and a smaller handling imperfection in the lower left quadrant. These are not distracting, and overall the presentation is bright, clean, and neat, with rich, clear tones.

The first with Vachon's F.S.A. credit stamp, the typed title and date, and the numeric notation in pencil, on verso, and the others with a Pictures for Democracy stamp with Vachon's credit and print notations in ink, and a typed label with Vachon's credit, the caption, and date, also on verso.
