JOHN VACHON (1914-1975) Bus depot, Washington, D.C. 1951; printed circa 1970.

JOHN VACHON (1914-1975)
Bus depot, Washington, D.C. 1951; printed circa 1970.
Silver print, the image measuring 9 5/8x9 7/8 inches (24.4x25.1 cm.), flush mounted, with Vachon's signature, title, and negative date in ink on mount verso.

  • Condition: John Vachon's "Bus depot, Washington, D.C." (1951; printed circa 1970) is in good condition. The print is contrasty and rich, with fine detail and tonality throughout.

It is flush mounted, and there are some small scattered chips at the extreme edges (there are no margins). The surface also evidences a half-moon handling crease at the top center, a few very shallow and scattered impressions (mostly within the top left quadrant), and unobtrusively small bumps or creases at the far corners (at the lower edge the print is just ever so slightly larger than the mount). The imperfections are primarily apparent in strong, raking light, and largely do not detract from the overall presentation.

Mount verso with two small surface abrasions, but overall clean. With Vachon's signature, title, and negative date in ink on mount verso.

Emotive and narrative, a compelling work from Vachon.
