In this controversial work, Whitgift, later Archbishop of Canterbury, argues against the Puritan Thomas Cartwright (1535-1603). As a strong proponent of Presbyterianism, Cartwright objected to many of the catholic-adjacent trappings of the Church of England. Not only did Whitgift consume innumerable hours writing against him, he also had Cartwright removed from his position as Lady Margaret's Professor of Divinity at Cambridge, and when Whitgift became master of Trinity College he removed Cartwright's fellowship status there.
