John Whorf was a traditional American artist best known for his luminous watercolors of nudes, landscapes, urban scenes and marine subjects. His style utilized vibrant colors and layered brushwork, in a manner influenced by predecessors such as John Singer Sargent, Edward Hopper and Winslow Homer. Whorf trained and worked most of his career in and around Boston as well as Provincetown, Massachusetts. In 1939, the Art Institute of Chicago honored Whorf with a special exhibition of his watercolors, alongside works by Hopper and Henri Matisse. In 1947, Whorf was elected to the National Academy of Design and, in 1948, to the American Watercolor Society. In Provincetown, he was a proud and active member of the famed Beachcombers artists club.
