(JOHNSON, HENRY.) Muster roll for Company I, 10th Cavalr y ("Buffalo Soldiers") with Medal of Honor winner Henry Johnson on the list. Partly-printed Document Signed by Theodore Baldwin, Captain, Company I with names of 45 colored cavalry members written in with their "X" next to their names. 30 x 18 inches; folded to 8.375 x 3.125 inches; few small holes at folds, only one affecting a few letters. Fort Sill, Indian Territory, 1872 E1,000/1,500 Johnson entered the 10th Cavalry from the 9th in 1872. During his tumultuous stay with both units, he was known as a tough soldier and a "brawler," having made sergeant 3 times and been reduced to private 3 times for fighting. In late 1879, during the battle of Milk River in Colorado, "Sergeant Henry Johnson, on the night of the second, [October] voluntarily left a sheltered position and under heavy fire at close range, made the rounds of the pits to instruct the guards; and also, on the next night, fought his way to the river and back to bring water to the wounded ."-The Black Military Experience in the American West, New York, (1971). The 10th's record is legendary, stationed in the midst of Indian territory, engaged in some of the fiercest fighting with Utes, Apaches and other tribes. Johnson applied for the Medal of Honor in 1890; with testimony of his officers and com-rades, his valor of 11 years was finally acknowledged.
