  • Notes: ". . . Just between the two of us, there is really a very simple explanation for the reported success of Friday's press conference.
    "I simply posted No Smoking signs in the East Room.
    "It was the first time in four years that the American people had a clear view of me.
    "Let that encourage you to post similar signs through your house."
    In the news conference held on November 17, 1967, Johnson stated that "every American's heart should swell with pride at the competence and capacity of our leadership in Vietnam," and that "[w]e are making progress" there.
