As the First Great Awakening wound down, Edwards observed acidly that "all remarkable "Revivals of Religion . . . soon followed with a great Increase of Stupidity, corrupt Principles, a profane and atheistical Spirit, and the Triumph of the open Enemies of Religion" (page ii).     The book has distinguished early provenance: original owner John Stits [Stites] (1706-1782) of Elizabeth, NJ (not listed among the subscribers); his son-in-law the Rev. James Manning (1738-1791), founding president of Brown University in Rhode Island and a Continental Congress delegate; Manning's nephew, the Rev. Stephen Gano (1762-1828), who succeeded Manning as pastor of Providence's First Baptist Church in America; Gano's son-in-law, the Rev. Peter Ludlow Jr. (1797-1837) of Enfield, CT; historian Gilbert Wilkinson Hazeltine (1818-1893) of Jamestown, NY in 1854; Swann sale, 18 September 1986, lot 31.
