Folio, 281x174 mm and 281x183 mm, contemporary calf, neatly rebacked, endpapers renewed; attractive set with only occasional toning and insignificant soiling, small hole through border in Volume 1 title, clean vertical tear in gutter of D6 and small hole in F4 in Every Man in his Humour, clean tear in lower outer corner of 2A5 in Poetaster, angular ink blot in blank outer margin of title to Epicoene with small hole from oxidation, blank corner off 2Y5 in Epicoene, small rust holes through 3K1 in The Alchemist, 4G1 in Masques, and I5 in The Staple of Newes affecting a few letters.   • Notes: first collected edition, small-paper set; second issue of Volume 2, with the sheets of the 1631 edition bound with cancel title dated 1640. The complicated publishing history of this collection of Jonson's plays and miscellaneous writings resulted in numerous bibliographical variations. The contents of this set follow the collations given in Pforzheimer, except that in Volume 2 The Staple of Newes is bound before The Divell is an Asse, and in Volume 3 the portion comprising The Magnetick Lady, A Tale of a Tub, and The Sad Shepherd is bound between the Masques and Under-woods. In Volume 1, the general title is in the state with William Stansby imprint; title of Every Man out of His Humour in state without border; G1.6 and G2.5 in second setting per Pforzheimer; title of Cynthia's Revels in state without border; title of Poetaster in state with border; and gathering 2Y, 4Q3v, and 4Q4r in small-paper setting.
