JOSEPH ALFRED BELLET DU POISAT
(Bourgoin-Jallieu 1823-1883 Paris)
A Landscape with Rolling Hills.

Color pastels on tan wove paper, 1859. 178x280 mm; 7 1/8x11 inches. Signed and dated in ink, lower left recto.

Bellet du Poisat studied initially in Lyon and then, in the mid 1840s, in Paris, with Eugène Delacroix among others. His works from the 1850s reveal Delacroix's influence, though by the end of the decade and into the 1860s he developed a more individual style centered on Realism and a direct interpretation of nature; as such he is considered a precursor to the Impressionist movement of the 1860s-1870s and later. He was a close friend of the artist François-Auguste Ravier in Paris, who was connected with the Barbizon School of painters, as well as Edgar Degas, who painted his portrait in 1865.
