JOSEPHINE BAKER. Gouache maquette. Circa 1931.
20 3/4x14 3/4 inches.
Condition B+: minor losses in top left corner and top margin; pin-holes in corners; tear through left margin; minor discoloration in image. Paper.
The maquette, in gouache, is very similar to the poster. The only major difference is the partition which, in the printed poster, goes over her teeth. Although never before seen on the market, this image obviously exists in other places. The poster was used on the cover of a Josephine Baker double CD (Elysee-Sandstone, SAN 5001) in 1991! And Chassaing did not even get posthumous credit for his masterpiece, as his name is not mentioned in the credits for the album cover.
