[JOYCE, JAMES.] Colum, Padraic. Typescript and proofs for unpublished U.S. edition of James Clarence Mangan: An Essay. With a Note by Padriac[sic] Colum. Publisher's archive of 5 items relating to the attempted publication of The Slide Mountain Press edition. As described below. All items laid into a custom cloth chemise and slipcase with gilt-lettered red morocco spine label. Gaylordsville, 1930
Colum wished to bring this important essay by Joyce on the 19th-century poet Mangan to a broader audience. Written while a university student and first delivered as a lecture at the February 1, 1902 meeting of the Literary and Historical Society of University College, Dublin, it was subsequently published in its literary magazine, St. Stephens'. Separately printed for Joyce in a limited edition of 40 copies by Ulysses Bookshop in London in 1930, it was never published in America. Slocum & Cahoon A39 and C2.
His poetic description states: "It is the combination of youthful music and mature wisdom that makes James Joyce's essay on James Clarence Mangan such a remarkable, such a beautiful piece of writing." A very tempered and unbiased portrait, the essay shows Joyce's tremendous powers of critical and analytical writing.
Carbon typescript, setting copy with penciled directions to printer. 11 pages, stapled, center horizontal fold, some soiling, last page loose * Trial proof of the title-page and two sample text leaves, mounted to board * Mock-up of proofs with editor's and printer's corrections and queries, text cut and pasted to folded 8vo sheets * Printed proofs in a trial green paper wrapper with printed paper title label, separated along spine * Two typed pages of Colum's proposed introduction, or, "Note" about the work; few corrected typos.
