JOYCE, JAMES. Dubliners.
SCARCE SECOND ENGLISH EDITION JOYCE, JAMES. Dubliners. 8vo, gilt-lettered burgundy cloth, lightly rubbed, spine evenly faded; last third of contents on a slightly darker paper stock (see note below); custom gilt-lettered green cloth clamshell box. London: Grant Richards, [1918]
scarce second published english edition. By the time of the second American edition in 1917 published by Huebsch, Joyce's English publisher Richards had run out of stock. Following pressure from Joyce to publish a second English edition, Richards imported sheets from the second American edition and bound just enough copies to satisfy Joyce. It is not known how many exist, but only two copies have come on the market since the 1970s. For this edition, leaves [1]-2 were cancelled and replaced with a new half-title and title; further, like pages 193-288 of the American sheets, these leaves were on poorer paper stock and are often browned as here. Slocum and Cahoon A8 and A10 notes.
