JOYCE'S MASTERPIECE AT 90 JOYCE, JAMES. Ulysses. [10], 732, [6] pages. Thick 4to, bound in unsigned contemporary deep brown morocco gilt, moderate surface rubbing, mostly along edges and spine, expert early rebacking with spine re-laid; bound in are the original Greek blue wrappers lettered in white with average light toning and occasional light loss of color along edges, top edges very slightly trimmed and gilt, others untrimmed, small stamp from the Librairie Anglo-Française on the blank preceding the front wrapper; custom gilt-lettered 1/4 blue morocco clamshell case.   • Notes: number 162 from the first edition of 150 copies on vergé d'arches and one of the "giant joyce" copies given to harriet weaver. This issue became known as the "Giant Joyce" because its dimensions were larger than those of the other limitations. This copy is one of the four of this issue given to Joyce's great supporter and patron Harriet Weaver. (In addition to receiving copy number one, inscribed to her by Joyce, she was given an additional 5 copies on Dutch paper and roughly 26 of the 750 on handmade Vergé à Barbe.)
    with a signed autograph inscription by joyce to an unknown recipient, written on a small card mounted to the front pastedown: "With best wishes / for many happy / returns of your / birthday / 14/iii 1924 Paris / James Joyce." A few small pin holes appear in the top margin of the inscription. Slocum & Cahoon A17; Horowitz, Census, page 120.
