JOYCE, JAMES. Ulysses.

JOYCE, JAMES. Ulysses. [10], 732, [6] pages. Thick 4to, original Greek blue wrappers lettered in white, 1/2-inch square chip to inner upper corner of front wrapper with wrapper neatly separated along front joint, backstrip with usual creasing and only minor rubbing to head and foot, some subtle discoloration that's just slightly darker on back wrapper; internally clean with no markings; preserved in custom cloth chemise and 1/4 morocco gilt-lettered slipcase. Paris: Shakespeare & Company, 1922

  • Notes: number 408 of 750 copies on handmade paper. an unsophisticated and unopened copy. The first printing of Ulysses consisted of 1000 copies comprising three various limitations: the first 100 were printed on Dutch handmade paper, numbered and signed by Joyce; copies 101-250 were printed on Vergé d'Arches paper, not signed; and the final 750, as here, were numbered 251-1000 and printed on a lesser grade of handmade paper and like the previous limitation, were not signed by Joyce. The most significant and celebrated English language novel of the 20th Century, its publishing trials and tribulations are legend. Stymied by obscenity charges that prevented its serial publication in The Egoist, Joyce's masterpiece was published instead by Sylvia Beach in the winter of 1922 under her imprint at the Shakespeare and Company bookshop in Paris.
