Notes: inscribed and signed by joyce in year of publication. One of 600 copies and the first published translation of any of Joyce's works into another language. Gallup D43.
Joyce was living in Zürich at the time of publication and was actively involved in The English Players, the theater troupe he formed with British actor Claude Sykes. They produced numerous plays, but their plans to perform Exiles, Joyce's only extant play, never materialized. It was eventually produced at the Münchner theater in Munich that September (the time of this inscription). Joyce, who ran into financial difficulty during his tenure as business manager at the English Players, was helped by wealthy friend J. S. Watson, Jr. It would make sense then, that this inscription is to him, though the name appears to read to "J. R. Watson Jun(?) with grateful regards James Joyce / Zürich Switzerland" and dated 9 / ix / 1919.
