(JUDAICA.) Archive of Hershman family papers. Approximately 200 items in one box, 0.4 linear feet, various sizes and conditions. Mostly Detroit and New York City, 1931-85

  • Notes: Dr. Abraham Moses Hershman (1880-1959) was born in Lithuania, and became rabbi of Detroit's Shaarey Zedek synagogue in 1907. He published numerous works, was active in the Zionist movement, and retired in 1946. His obituary in the Detroit Jewish Times called him "one of the most distinguished religious leaders in America." His wife, born Miriam Lewin-Epstein (1886-1955) was also a leader in Detroit Jewish circles. Their daughters Ruth Hershman (1910-1998) and Eiga Hershman (1913-2003) lived in New York City, where Ruth was executive secretary of the American Israel Public Affairs Committee.
This is an archive of daughter Ruth Hershman's papers relating to her notable parents and grandparents and to Israel. Of particular interest are a series of eleven Autograph Letters Signed from Rabbi Hershman to his daughters during their long stay in Palestine from 1934 to 1936. One 20 January 1936 passage reads "The only dead fly in the ointment of your voyage was, as far as I can see, your contact with some jingo Arabs. But let that not disturb you. The Arab students who study abroad return infected with the virus of chauvinism and try to spread it among their less sophisticated compatriots. I trust and pray that in the course of time, a marked improvement will be affected in the Arab-Jewish relations." Another striking letter from Miriam Lewin-Epstein dated 23 June 1943 discusses the infamous Detroit Race Riot which had just killed 34 people: "It is quiet now, but I don't know whether it is the calm before or after the storm. The city is full of troops and military police. . . . My laundress did not know about the riot until she came out here. . . . She was so nervous all day it just made me sick to see how she felt. I wanted her to stay overnight, not knowing how it would be for her to travel. She wanted to be with her own people & went home early."
The collection includes: a total of 16 letters from Abraham and Miriam Hershman to their daughters, 1934-1954 * Typescript on Palestine titled "Camp Hadas," 4 pages, 1937 * 2 original photographs of Abraham and Miriam Hershman, undated, and several other later copy prints * A thick folder of memoranda relating to Ruth Hershman's work with the American Israel Public Affairs Committee, particularly with efforts to counter Arab speakers on college campuses, 1965-68 * Ruth Hershman. "The Story of Miriam L-E Hershman." Typescript photocopy, 24 pages. Describes late-19th century life in Palestine. Circa 1984 * Ruth Hershman. "In Pursuit of a Dream." Typescript photocopy, 52, 96 pages in two binders. Biography of Zionist leader Elias Wolf Lewin-Epstein (1863-1932), partly from his unpublished memoirs. 1979 and undated * "Proceedings, Memorial Service, Rehabiah Lewin-Epstein." Typescript, 26 pages. New York, Jewish Institution of Religion, 1942 * Numerous letters, essays, and clippings relating to Rabbi Hershman's career, 1931-1985.
