(JUDAICA.) NORDAU, MAX. Autograph Postcard Signed, "Dr. M. Nordau," to Isaac Markens,

LINCOLN'S JEWISH EXTRACTION AND GRANT'S ANTI-SEMITISM (JUDAICA.) NORDAU, MAX. Autograph Postcard Signed, "Dr. M. Nordau," to Isaac Markens, agreeing with the view about Lincoln's Jewish heritage espoused in his pamplet, Abraham Lincoln and the Jews, and expressing indignation aroused by an anecdote about U.S. Grant's treatment of Jews. 1 1/2 pages, 12mo, written on the recto and verso of a single sheet; inlaid; matted in a double-sided frame. Karlsbad, 13 August 1912

  • Notes: In full: "I have read with great interest your pamphlet on 'Abraham Lincoln and the Jews.' It is a valuable contribution to American history and throws remarkable sidelights on little known, though momentous episodes. The idea to attribute [to] Lincoln a Jewish extraction is preposterous--just a good specimen of the manner of that vain, timeserving, selfseeking, inconsistent and little truthful man--[Isaac M.?] Wise. The story of the Army order No. 11 of Ulysses Grant is appalling. It shows how thin the floor between Jews and Hell was (and most probably still is) even in enlightened free America. So a commander in chief of the U.S. Army and future President of the U.S. treated the Jews cold-bloodedly in a worse manner than the worst governor of a Russian Gubernium--worse than they are treated now in Kieff and Ekaterinoslaw--and there was no outcry of horror among Americans, only a few upright men protested together with the immediate victims. What an object lesson to Jewish optimists."
