Tired of Giving? / Notice to the World, pair of posters from the United Jewish Appeal.

[Newark, NJ], circa 1927
The United Jewish Appeal / United Palestine Appeal uses massive guilt trips to inspire charitable giving with these two posters.

"Tired of Giving?" Broadsheet, 21½ x 16 inches; folds, faint dampstaining, ½-inch puncture in lower margin. This cleverly designed poster has "Tired?" printed five times in ever-increasing type on verso. As issued, it was folded down to business card size, with the first "Tired" the only thing visible. As the poster unfolds, "Tired?" gets larger and larger, until the full poster shows a weary woman asking "Tired of Giving? You don't know what it is to be tired!" The Jewish community of Newark is urged to "Help the Suffering Jews of Eastern Europe to help themselves! Help the restoration of the National Homeland in Palestine! . . . Give until Your Conscience feels Good!" The United Palestine Appeal was mentioned in New Jersey newspapers from 1925 onward, with Newark banker Meyer Kussy first named as treasurer of the Northern New Jersey branch in the 2 November 1926 issue of the Bayonne Times; he died in January 1928.

"Notice to the World." Poster, 20 x 15 inches; folds, closed tears repairs on verso, scrapbook remnant covering one quarter panel on verso, corner wear. This second poster uses the same typeface as the first, and the same message, although it does not directly state the charity. It wonders if the "Jews of Newark" "do not care about those who suffer," "cannot be bothered with dying children, and "want to be left alone with our money," asking in conclusion "Is this your creed"?
