JULES CHERET KOLA MARQUE. Circa 1895.

23 1/2x16 inches. Chaix, Paris.
Condition B+: restoration along horizontal fold; creases in margins.
Kola Marque was one of the many fortified wines available in turn-of-the-century France. These products, made with coca or coffee, were sold to stimulate the body and spirit ?not as a medicine, however, but as an aperitif. Here Cheret depicts a North African dancer with a bottle in her hand. It is a simple poster, and his design is inhibited by the inclusion of too much text, which was a classic mistake made by early advertising clients. This is the smaller format. Broido 878.
