JULES CHERET PARIS ILLUSTRE. Magazine cover, March 10, 1888.

15 1/2x11 1/2 inches. A. Lahure, Paris.
Condition A-: minor tears at edges. Paper. Front and back cover, contents missing.
This cover for a short-lived magazine is of the highest importance in Cheret's work, coming at a seminal time in his development as a master lithographer. 1888 was the year Cheret mastered the four-color lithographic process that marked his work ever since. Three posters from that year point to this revolution, L'Amant des Danseueses, La Halle aux Chapeaux and Les Montagnes Russes. But in none of these posters is Cheret as free in spreading light and distributing colors as in this charming composition, whose movement and ease seem to represent the artist in his full maturity.
