  • Notes: Juliet Appleby Kepes met her future husband in London in 1936. The following year Laslo Moholy-Nagy asked Kepes to join him in establishing the New Bauhaus school in Chicago, and he accepted. Juliet and Gyorgy Kepes moved to the United states where he was an instructor at the New Bauhaus and she was a student. br> br>In the 1950s Juliet began writing and illustrating childrens books. Her innovative approach to illustration earned her a Caldecott Medal in 1953. Aside from her many publications she also created sculptures and murals for public playgrounds and buildings.

Some of her best known books are, "Five Little Monkeys," 1953, "Beasts from a Brush," 1955, and "Frogs Merry," 1961. The pair of works in this lot are typical of Juliet Kepes' unique style of rendering animals in a magical realism charged with energy and motion.
