Klinger is recognized as one of the best German poster artists and illustrators working in pre-War Berlin. He was also an accomplished typographer. Artistically his oeuvre was marked by flat tones and strong outlining that was popular in Germany at the time. Stylistically the images portrayed in his posters reflect humor and witty design that was not so prevalent at the time. Although his work is not normally associated with Jugendstil design, between 1897 and 1902 he worked as an illustrator for the German magazine Die Jugend. Likely through his work at the magazine he received this commission from a Parisian publisher (it is believed that Klinger never actually visited Paris). The result is an exceptional book of Secession-style decorative motifs, "modèles nouveaux pour les industries d'art." Klinger's versatile and innovative talent helped him create a panoply of friezes, vignettes, figures and compositions that are reminiscent of the haute Secessionist design found in Die Fläche (see Swann Modernist Poster Auction #1935, lot 2). Much in the manner of Alphonse Mucha's 1890 Combinaisons Ornementales, Klinger's designs were meant as inspiration for artists and students, for paintings, posters, jewelry, ceramics, textiles and stained glass windows. Very rare. Klinger B7 (var).
