"YOU GOT THE STORY OF FREUD'S FAINTING ATTACK QUITE WRONG" JUNG, CARL GUSTAV. Typed Letter Signed, "C.G. Jung," to Freud's biographer Ernest Jones, giving permission for him to read copies of Freud's letters, and correcting his account of Freud's fainting spell [in 1912]. 1 page, oblong 8vo, "Prof. Dr. C.G. Jung" stationery; vertical fold. (RKM) "Küsnacht-Zürich," 19 Dec[ember] 1953

  • Notes: "Of course you have my permission to read Freud's letters copies of which are in the Freud Archives in New York.
"Your biographical material is very interesting although it would have been advisable to consult me for certain facts. For instance, you got the story of Freud's fainting attack quite wrong. It also was by no means the first one; he had such an attack before in 1909 previous to our departure for America in Bremen, and very much under the same psychological circumstances.
"Hoping you are going on to continue enjoying old age . . . ."
Alfred Ernest Jones (1879-1958) was an English psychoanalyst who helped Freud evade the Nazis by bringing him to London in 1938, published an authoritative biography on Freud in 1953 (Life and Work), founded the American Psychoanalytical Association in 1911, founded the British Psychoanalytical Society in 1919, and, in 1920, founded both the International Journal of Psychoanalysis and the International Psychoanalytical Association.
