The South Manchuria Railway, founded in 1906, was operated by the Japanese government in northeastern China. Ownership passed through several hands, and after World War II, the railway was operated by the Soviets for a time, and handed over to China Railway after the establishment of the People's Republic of China in 1949. Here, modern meets the traditional as telegraph poles and their wires run above the rooftops and temples of a northeastern Chinese town.
