(JUVENILE MANUSCRIPT.) Rules and Regulations of the Tawnee Indians.
(JUVENILE MANUSCRIPT.) Rules and Regulations of the Tawnee Indians. Manuscript, illustrated with numerous drawings in ink and watercolor. 62 pages. 12mo, original wrappers, stitched. [Ohio?], 1858-59
- Notes: A remarkable chronicle of the affairs of a club of 10 to 15-year-old boys for a period of 9 months. Includes sections on rules, duties of braves, directions for performing ceremonial dances and making Indian weapons and utensils, minutes of meetings, vocabulary of a manufactured Indian language, and examples of Tawnee music. A typical section titled "The Character &c of the Tawnee Tribe of Indians" notes that "The Tawnees are generally tall, and rather strong, they do not drink wine or spirit, nor do they (sware) curse except to use the word ''ribbi'' which means ''blame it.''" A separate note by an earlier owner describes the provenance as "certainly Ohio."
