  • Provenance: Notes:
Käthe Kollwitz developed a practice that highlighted women and the working class, acting as an advocate for these marginalized groups in times of suffering and social upheaval. Die Witwe I, or The Widow I in English, comes from the portfolio Sieben Holzschnitte zum Krieg, which depicts, in bold and contrasted woodcut prints, the pain and agony of those who lost loved ones in war.

Her proclivity for depicting poignant scenes of loss and suffering developed primarily from her own experience of losing her son in World War I, which turned into a broader sense of duty she felt to promote peace. Of her sense of purpose in this mission, she noted in her diary, "This is my task, but it is not an easy one to fulfil [sic]."
