KAFKA, FRANZ. Die Verwandlung. As published in Der Jüngste Tag 2 2/23. 8vo, original pictorial wrappers, browned and soiled, spine with vertical clean tear along front joint and ends worn with some loss; re-cased with paper guard bound over text block, once attached, but now loose, leaving mild splits along spine; pages fresh; bookplate on paper guard. • Notes: first edition in book form of kafka's most famous work, The Metamorphosis. First published in "Die Weissen Blätter" during World War I, the author was anxious to have it published in book form. In a well-known letter to his publisher, Kafka insisted that the cover image by Ottomar Starke not depict the insect itself. Wilpert/Gühring 4; Dietz 26.
