(KANSAS.) Kenney, Daniel. A soldier's letter describing his journey to Fort Scott.

(KANSAS.) Kenney, Daniel. A soldier's letter describing his journey to Fort Scott. Autograph Letter Signed to friend James Wells of Pennsylvania. 4 pages, 9 3/4 x 7 3/4 inches, on one sheet; separations and tape repairs at folds, moderate staining. Fort Scott, KS, 24 June 1848

  • Notes: Native Pennsylvanian Daniel G. Kenney (1806-1848) enlisted in the Army in 1841, but was weakened by chronic bronchitis. By the time of this letter seven years later, he and his wife had removed to Fort Scott on the western frontier, where he was able to do some light clerical duty as an ordnance sergeant. This letter describes his harrowing journey and gives a pleasant picture of the landscape at Fort Scott. His army enlistment shows that he died there two months later.
