Karel Maes

1900-1974

[Geometric Compositions]. Group of 4 linocut proofs. 1920-1925.

Condition varies, generally A-. Each initialed or signed by the artist in Pencil, one with title "Kompostie" and another numbered "no. 27"; two with Maeyens' collection stamp on verso. Paper, one printed on tissue.

Items stamped "E.M." are from Emanuel Maeyens' collection, not designed by him. Emanuel Maeyens ran an art supply shop called De Distel "The Thistle," which was often advertised in issues of Het Overzicht. Maeyens' collection included prints by international members of the avant-garde, including Karel Maes, Jozef Peeters and Laszlo Peri.

Maes was one of the preeminent Belgian modernists. Most of his linoleum cuts were published in journals in the 1920s.
