- Notes: first edition. Elizabeth Keckley (1818-1907), dressmaker, White House modiste, and confidante to Mary Todd Lincoln, was born a slave in Virginia. She was able to buy her freedom in 1855 after saving the money earned from sewing and dressmaking. She then settled in Washington. Before working for Mrs. Lincoln, she was the dressmaker to Varina Howell Davis, wife of Jefferson Davis.
