KEETMAN, PETER (1916- )

"Oltropfen auf Wasser [Oil drops on Water]." Ferrotyped silver print, 9 1/4x7 inches (23.5x17.8 cm.), with Keetman's signature, title, date, and notations, in pencil, and his hand stamp on verso. 1956

  • Notes: In the late 1940s, a group of German photographers calling themselves "fotoforum" formed around the idea of "subjective photography." The group included Keetman, Heinz Hajek-Halke, Otto Steinert, and Herbert List, among others. The philosophy behind "subjective photography" was rooted in the Bauhaus's graphic style. The photographers desired to interpret the reality they saw subjectively rather than create an objective representation of the world around them. It was, in part, a response to the stark realism of Nazi propaganda photography so prevalent during the war and a retreat to a more benign aesthetic that was devoid of political or social meaning. Keetman's clean graphic imagery is perhaps the most in line with the philosophy of fotoforum. This image is reproduced in peter keetman: fotoform (Berlin, 1988), p. 54.
