Keith Haring

(1958-1990)

Untitled.

Tempera, oil pastel and newspaper collage on bond paper, 1978.
Signed and dated in pencil, lower left.
23 7/8 x 18 3/8 in. (60.6 x 46.7 cm.)

  • Provenance:
Gift from the artist to current owner, Pittsburgh, 1978.
  • Notes:
Haring first moved to New York City and enrolled in the School of Visual Arts in 1978, after his first solo show at the Pittsburgh Arts and Crafts Center. This early work executed in the same year embodies this period of transition, showing the influence of early inspirations, Jean Dubuffet and Pierre Alechinsky, with the emergence of his signature figurative line work solidified in the 1980s. A similar composition of expressive squares in a loose grid done in felt-tip pen and watercolor was created in the same year, and is illustrated on the Keith Haring Foundation website. This example features a newspaper collage element, indicative of his New York Post headline collage series exhibited at his 1980 installation at his studio space P.S. 122. Haring went on to photocopy hundreds of these collages, pasting them to lampposts and newsstands, and distributing them at clubs and to passersby on the street.
