(KENNEDY, JOHN F.) Jones, Evelyn M. Remembrances of My Kennedy Years.

(KENNEDY, JOHN F.) Jones, Evelyn M. Remembrances of My Kennedy Years. 49 loose typescript pages, along with 3 manuscript notebooks of her first draft (81, 87, and 44 pages); the typescript a bit dog-eared, and one of the notebook covers detached. [Palm Beach, FL?], circa 1973

  • Notes: Evelyn Marsh Jones (1906-1978) was a domestic worker for the Kennedy family intermittently from 1932 to 1964, spending about ten years in their employ in Hyannis Port and Palm Beach. After her retirement, she wrote this memoir, which has apparently remained unpublished. She was strongly loyal to the Kennedys and was critical of other authors who tried to embarrass the family. While she does not dish out gossip, Jones does share dozens of revealing anecdotes about the family gathered from close exposure.
Patriarch Joseph Kennedy learned that caretaker Wilbert Marsh was ill and insisted on sending him to the Lahey Clinic, which discovered cancer and treated it successfully; Jones credits the family with extending Marsh's life by decades. She also recalls fondly that the family was able to "help themselves, if necessary," adding that Rose Kennedy "often came out and dried dishes so I might get away a little earlier." She recalls the toddler Caroline Kennedy interrupting the President's press conference by walking onto the patio wearing her mother's high heels. Jones also addresses criticism from the president's secretary Evelyn Lincoln, who in her own memoir described the Palm Beach staff as "running around in circles." Jones responds patiently that "the Kennedy house is not the White House . . . and a rather small staff and I felt, under the circumstances, we managed very well." She last saw President Kennedy when he visited Palm Beach from 12 to 14 November 1963, eight days before the assassination, a visit described warmly and at length.
Even leaving the Kennedy connection aside, this is a worthy account of life as a parlor maid and household manager for one of America's most distinguished families. The hard work, last-minute improvisations, staff turnover, and parties with famous guests are all described in detail. Enthusiasts of Upstairs Downstairs and Downton Abbey are guaranteed to enjoy this real-life American version.
Provenance: Her husband Thomas M. Jones Jr. (1905-1980); his sister Evelyn R. (Jones) Drinkwater (1918-1998).
