Approximately 446 photographs: 381 chromogenic prints, 8 x 10 inches, and 65 silver prints, 8 x 10 inches or smaller; slight fading to the color prints as usual; many with Stoughton's inked stamps and penciled negative numbers on verso and/or his embossed stamps in lower margins. • Notes: Cecil W. Stoughton (1920-2008) was the official White House photographer during the entire span of John F. Kennedy''s presidency, on assignment from the United States Army Signal Corps. This expansive collection of his work includes some of the key moments of Kennedy''s short presidency, including his "Ich bin ein Berliner" speech in West Berlin and his fateful final trip to Dallas, as well as more personal moments with his wife, father, and children. Includes: 22 images from his 19 May 1962 birthday party in New York * 100 from his June-July 1963 trip to Europe, during which he delivered his famous "Ich bin ein Berliner" speech in West Berlin * 52 candid shots from family vacations to Hyannis Port, MA and Atoka, VA, July-November 1963 * 66 from his appearances at official state functions in the week of 11-18 November 1963 * 104 from his fateful final trip to Texas, 21-22 November 1963 (some of them later silver prints) * 18 images taken aboard Air Force One immediately after the assassination, including several of Lyndon B. Johnson taking the oath of office (later silver prints) * and 84 of Kennedy''s funeral.
The great bulk of the photographs are chromogenic prints which were apparently produced in the 1960s, shortly after Stoughton''s time with Kennedy. A few of the black and white silver prints may have been produced by Stoughton somewhat later, perhaps in the mid-1970s; these include some of the Texas trip photos, as well as all of Air Force One. The album of silver prints from the 1962 birthday party appears to be yet later, perhaps from circa 1980. Provenance: sold by Stoughton''s estate at a Bonhams sale, 9 December 2010, lot 6200 and part of lot 6191, to the consignor. A more detailed summary is available upon request.
