YOUNG KENNEDY THE JOURNALIST ON REPUBLIC OF IRELAND KENNEDY, JOHN F. Typescript Signed, carbon copy of an article entitled "Emon de Valera Seeks to Unite All Ireland." • Notes: Written for the New York Journal American during Kennedy's brief stint as a journalist, the article discusses the relationship between England and Ireland in the wake of De Valera's statement that "We are a Republic."
In part: "To find the answer to these questions is to know the fundamental motivating force behind Irish politics . . . . Every Irishman, wherever in the world he may be, knows what it is. It is the age-old quarrel with England, once fought in Dail and council chambers. Sheridan once said, 'A quarrel is a very pretty quarrel as it stands. We should only spoil it by trying to explain it.'"
